Here’s a short list of fun and interesting things that not too many people may know about me. This page was a lot of fun for me to create and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Now, for the rest of the story.

Movie Star

I really was an extra in the movie Major League with Charlie Sheen. The movie was filmed at the Milwaukee County stadium where the Brewers where having a open try-out, and they asked us to stay and be stand-ins.

It was a fun experience.

World traveler

I have only been out of the country twice in my lifetime. I went to Mexico a couple of years ago and back in 2000 I went to Australia for two weeks.

That’s about the extent of my world traveling. 🙂

My kids

I have two wonderful kids that I love and adore. My son who is 22 and a daughter who is 17 keep my life full and filled with joy. I also help my girlfriend raise her 16 year old daughter; who is like a daughter to me that inspires me and fills my heart with gratitude and appreciation.

Batman and Robin

I dressed up one Halloween as Batman to surprise my daughter Dani.

The funny thing was I showed up to surprise her and she was dressed up as Robin.

The surprise was on me!

Always remember Robin, “Better three hours too soon than a minute too late.” –Batman

Getting healthy

I used to weigh 280 pounds. I lost the weight by mountain biking and changing my diet.

On January 6, 2009, we did a weight loss contest at work. I weighed 265 pounds then and on October 1, 2009, I was down to 180 pounds… and yes, I won the contest, but nobody paid up.

That was okay because I won a lot more than money. I got my health back.

Scuba diving

I love to scuba dive. The deepest I have dived so far is 130 feet.

When I’m diving it’s like being in a whole different world on a different planet.

It’s so peaceful and calm. Very relaxing and beautiful.

Mountain bike racing

I am passionate about racing mountain bikes and I compete in the sport class.

The longest ride I have done is 100 miles and I did it in the Ride For The Cure Race. I rode for Andy, who is the son of a good friend of mine, who has juvenile diabetes.

Finishing this race was one of the hardest races I had ever been in and yet it was one of the most satisfying and rewarding things I have ever done.

Stopped and hand cuffed…

When I was in the 7th grade, I crossed over a blown down fence at Nellis Air Force base with a friend of mine.

We made it almost to the runway when the Military Police stopped us and hand cuffed us, then they called our parents.

Here’s the best part.

The base commander came in and apologized for the treatment we received and as a reward for us pointing out that the base fence was down, he gave us a private tour of the F16 Thunder Birds.

My roots

My Mom was from Wisconsin and my Dad was from from New York. They met in Santa Barbara, California where they fell in love and were married. I was born in Santa Barbara.

We moved to Wisconsin when I was two years old and lived there until I was in the sixth grade. We moved to Las Vegas until I was in the 10th grade. Then we packed up and moved back to Wisconsin again.

So, when people ask where I’m from, I always say I’m from Wisconsin because that’s where I spent most of my time growing up.

Mike Lather at Super Bowl Game
Green Bay Packers

I went to the Super Bowl game by myself because my brother had to back out at the last minute.

So, I went anyway because I figured I could find 70,000 other Cheeseheads to be with.

I had an awesome time.

Mike Lather Mushroom Hunting
Bonus Fun Fact:

There is one more hobby that I enjoy besides biking and hiking that I’m passionate about. I love going out wild mushroom hunting with Emma. I’ve hunted mushrooms as a young child and probably stepped on more than I found back then.

There is magic in wild mushroom hunting and being out in the woods. I don’t mean the kind of magic that makes things disappear, but the magic of Mother Nature that opens your eyes to a world that you once missed.
